Casio module 3489: user manual and setup (BGD-565SJ, BGD-565GC, BGD-565SC)

The module number is engraved on the case back of the watch. It is a four-digit number and is separate from the model number. If the back of your watch says 3489, this manual applies to it. The official Casio manual is shared by modules 3229, 3421 and 3489.

Which watches use module 3489

Module 3489 is digital. The time, date and other functions are shown as digits on the display. Depending on the model, the digits are dark on a light background or light on a dark background. At Classic the module is found in the following models:

• BGD-565GC-2ER – Casio Baby-G BGD-565GC-2ER
• BGD-565SC-2BER – Casio G-Shock BGD-565SC-2BER

Buttons and modes

The manual labels the buttons with the letters A, B, C and D. The watch has four modes: Timekeeping, Alarm, Countdown Timer and Stopwatch.

• Button C changes modes in this order: Timekeeping – Alarm – Countdown Timer – Stopwatch – Timekeeping.
• After an operation in any mode, pressing C returns to Timekeeping Mode.
• Button D turns on the illumination in any mode. It goes out about two seconds after you release the button.
• In the Timekeeping, Alarm and Countdown Timer modes, button A opens the settings and B changes the selected value.

How to set the time and date

1. In Timekeeping Mode, press A. The seconds start to flash because they are selected for setting.
2. Use button C to move between seconds, hour, minutes, day, month and year.
3. While the seconds are flashing, press B to reset them to 00. If the seconds are between 30 and 59, the minutes increase by one. With seconds from 00 to 29, the minutes do not change.
4. For any other flashing value, B increases it. Holding B changes the number at high speed.
5. While any value is flashing, press D to switch between 12-hour and 24-hour format.
6. After setting the time and date, press A to return to Timekeeping Mode.

The day of the week is set automatically according to the date. The date can be in the range from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2099. If you do not press a button for a few minutes while a value is flashing, the watch returns to Timekeeping Mode by itself.

Illumination and Flash Alert

The illumination lights the display and is turned on with button D at any time. It uses an electroluminescent (EL) panel, which loses brightness after very long use. Frequent use of the illumination shortens the battery life. When the illumination is on, the watch makes a faint sound from a vibrating transistor. This is not a malfunction. The illumination is hard to see in direct sunlight. If an alarm starts to sound, the illumination turns off automatically.

Flash Alert makes the illumination flash while the alarm, the countdown timer alarm or the hourly time signal sounds. In Timekeeping Mode, hold B for about two seconds to turn Flash Alert on or off. An indicator on the display shows that the function is active and is visible in all modes. This setting affects only the flashing of the illumination, not the sound signals.

Alarm and hourly time signal

The alarm can be set with hour, minutes, month and day. When it is on, it sounds for 20 seconds at the set time. When the hourly time signal is on, the watch beeps every hour on the hour. The type of alarm depends on what you set:

• Daily alarm: hour and minutes, with "–" for the month and "– –" for the day. It sounds every day.
• Date alarm: month, day, hour and minutes. It sounds once on the specific date.
• One-month alarm: month, hour and minutes, with "– –" for the day. It sounds every day during that month only.
• Monthly alarm: day, hour and minutes, with "–" for the month. It sounds every month on that day.

1. In Alarm Mode, press A until the hour digits start to flash. The alarm turns on automatically.
2. Use button C to move between hour, minutes, month and day.
3. Use B to increase the selected value. Holding B changes the number quickly.
4. Press A to return to Alarm Mode.

The alarm format follows the format selected in Timekeeping Mode. With the 12-hour format, take care whether you are setting a morning or afternoon time. To stop a sounding alarm, press any button. In Alarm Mode, button B changes the status in this order: both off – alarm only – hourly time signal only – both on. Indicators on the display show which is on.

Countdown Timer

The timer can be set from 1 second to 24 hours. When the countdown reaches zero, the alarm sounds for 10 seconds or until you press a button.

1. In Countdown Timer Mode, press A. The hour digit starts to flash.
2. Use C to move between hours, minutes and seconds.
3. Use B to increase the selected value. For a start value of 24 hours, set 0:00'00.
4. Press A to return to Countdown Timer Mode.

To start the countdown, press B in Countdown Timer Mode. Pressing B again stops the countdown, and the next press resumes it. With the timer stopped, hold A until the time returns to the start value. With auto-repeat off, the countdown stops after zero and resets only after the alarm ends.

To turn auto-repeat on or off, press A in Countdown Timer Mode and then D. An indicator shows that auto-repeat is active. With auto-repeat on, the alarm sounds and the countdown restarts automatically each time it reaches zero. Stop it with B and reset it manually with A.

Stopwatch

Stopwatch Mode measures elapsed time. The manual also describes recording split times, as well as timing first and second place at a finish. The detailed steps are in the original PDF file below.
