Casio module 5585: user manual and setup (EFS-S630DC)

The module number is engraved on the back of the watch case. It is a four-digit number, separate from the catalogue number of the model. If the case back says 5585, the manual below applies to your watch.

Which watches use module 5585

Module 5585 is an analog solar movement with a stopwatch. The watch has hour, minute and second hands, as well as a 24-hour hand. The dial has a day of the month indicator. The stopwatch uses separate minute and second hands. Power comes from a solar panel and one rechargeable battery. At Classic this module is found in the following model:

Buttons and crown

The watch has two buttons, A and B, and a crown with two positions. The first position is Click 1, the second is Click 2. Click 1 is used for the day of the month. Click 2 is used for the time and for resetting the stopwatch hands. Buttons A and B control the stopwatch.

Some models water resistant to 100 or 200 meters have a screw-lock crown. Before setting, rotate the crown towards you to unscrew it. Then pull it out without excessive force. While the crown is unscrewed, the watch loses its water resistance. After setting, screw it in fully.

Some models come from the factory with a spacer around the crown. Remove it before first use. If the watch has a rotating bezel, align the ▼ mark with the minute hand. The elapsed time can then be read on the bezel.

How to set the time and date

Setting the time:

1. Wait until the second hand reaches 12 o'clock. Pull the crown out to the second position (Click 2).
2. Rotate the crown to set the hour and minutes.
3. Push the crown back in on a time signal. The watch continues keeping time.

Make sure you set the correct AM or PM time. When setting, move the minute hand four or five minutes past the desired position. Then move it back to the exact minute.

Setting the day of the month:

1. Pull the crown out to the first position (Click 1).
2. Rotate the crown towards you to set the day.
3. Push the crown back in.

The day indicator works with a 31-day month. In shorter months, correct it manually. Do not change the day between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM. Otherwise the indicator may not change correctly at midnight.

Stopwatch

The stopwatch measures elapsed time in 1-second steps. The maximum is 29 minutes and 59 seconds. Measurement stops automatically at the 30th minute. Do not operate the stopwatch while the crown is pulled out.

Elapsed time: A starts, A stops, A resumes, A stops again, B resets.

Split time: A starts, B shows the split time, B releases the split time, A stops, B resets.

Two finishes: A starts. B at the finish of the first runner shows their time. A at the finish of the second runner stops the measurement. B releases the split time and shows the time of the second runner. B resets.

Resetting the stopwatch hands

If the stopwatch hands do not return to zero after a reset, do the following:

1. Pull the crown out to the second position (Click 2).
2. Use button A (clockwise) and button B (counterclockwise) to move the stopwatch second and minute hands to 12 o'clock. Holding down a button moves the second hand quickly until it is released.
3. When the hands are in place, push the crown back in.

The stopwatch minute hand is synchronized with the second hand. While the crown is pulled out, timekeeping stops. After the reset, correct the time.

Solar charging

The entire dial is a solar panel. It charges the built-in rechargeable battery when exposed to light. Keep the watch in the light as often as possible. When you are not wearing it, leave it in a well-lit place. For stable operation, give it at least half a day of light per month. When you wear it, your sleeve should not cover the dial. Even partial covering reduces charging significantly.

During charging the case can become very hot. Take care to avoid burns. Do not charge on the dashboard of a car parked in the sun. Avoid proximity to incandescent lamps and other heat sources. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.

Approximate charging times for daily use: 6 minutes in outdoor sunlight (50,000 lux), 23 minutes in sunlight through a window (10,000 lux), 36 minutes in daylight on a cloudy day (5,000 lux), 6 hours under fluorescent lighting (500 lux).

With a fully discharged battery: to reach 1-second hand movement, you need 2 hours in outdoor sunlight, 6 hours through a window, 10 hours on a cloudy day or 96 hours under fluorescent light. A full charge takes 21 hours in outdoor sunlight, 78 hours through a window or 125 hours on a cloudy day. The actual time depends on conditions.

Battery indicator

With the crown pushed in, hold down button B for about one second. The stopwatch second hand shows the charge level. H means at least four months of operation. M means two to four months. L means no more than two months. After about two seconds the hand returns to 12 o'clock.

At low charge the second hand jumps every two seconds. This is a signal that the watch needs light.
