Casio module 5612: user manual and setup (GA-140)

The module number is engraved on the back of the watch, usually in a small rectangle next to the other markings. If it says 5612, this guide applies to your watch. The Casio manual is shared by modules 5612 and 5613, so the operations described are the same for both.

Which watches use module 5612

Module 5612 is a combination module: the watch has analog hands and a digital display. The analog time is synchronized with the digital time. When you change the digital time, the hands adjust automatically. At Classic this module is found in the following model:

Buttons and modes

The manual labels the buttons with the letters A, B, C and D. Button C changes modes. The watch has five modes: Timekeeping Mode, Stopwatch Mode, Countdown Timer Mode, Alarm Mode and World Time Mode. In every mode, except the setting mode, button B turns on the display illumination.

In Timekeeping Mode, button D switches the digital display between the date and the Home City time. The date screen shows the month, day and day of the week. The time screen shows hours, minutes, seconds, the city code and the PM indicator.

How to set the time and date

1. In Timekeeping Mode, hold down button A for at least three seconds. The current city code starts to flash in the lower part of the display. This is the setting mode.
2. Use button D (east) and button B (west) to select your Home City code. Select the Home City before any other setting. The full list of city codes is at the end of the manual.
3. Press C to move through the other settings. The order is: city code, daylight saving time (DST), seconds, hour, minutes, year, month, day, 12/24-hour format, illumination duration.
4. While the seconds are flashing, press D to reset them to 00.
5. For the hour and minutes, use D (+) and B (–) to change the value.
6. For the year, month and day, also use D (+) and B (–).
7. In the format setting, press D to switch between 12-hour (12H) and 24-hour (24H) format.
8. In the illumination setting, press D to select 1.5 seconds (LT1) or three seconds (LT3).
9. Press A to exit the setting mode.

The day of the week is shown automatically according to the set date. The selected 12- or 24-hour format applies to all modes. In 12-hour format, the PM indicator is shown from 12:00 noon to 23:59. In 24-hour format, the time is shown from 0:00 to 23:59 without an indicator.

If for any reason the analog time does not match the digital time, use the hand home position correction procedure. It is described below.

Daylight saving time (DST)

Daylight saving time moves the time one hour forward from standard time. Not all countries and regions use it. To change it, hold down A for at least three seconds in Timekeeping Mode. Press C once to reach the DST screen. Use button D to switch between on and OFF. Press A to exit. The factory setting is off. When daylight saving time is active, the DST indicator is shown on the display.

Stopwatch

The stopwatch measures elapsed time, lap time and split time. The maximum range is 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59.999 seconds. When the limit is reached, the measurement starts again from zero. The stopwatch keeps running after you leave the mode. In this case the upper digital segments appear and disappear in sequence to show that a measurement is in progress.

The watch also has a speed hand. Before any button operation, make sure it is not moving. If you set a distance, the watch calculates and displays speed. The distance can be in kilometers, miles or another unit of your choice. At a value of 0.0, speed is not calculated. For laps you can set the distance of one lap or the total distance. For split times only the total distance is set.

To set a distance, stop and reset the stopwatch with button A. Then hold down A for at least three seconds until the value starts to flash in the upper display.

Countdown Timer

The Countdown Timer Mode is a separate mode, accessed with button C. The manual describes how to set the countdown start time and how to turn on auto-repeat. The exact steps are in the Countdown Timer section of the PDF file.

World Time

In World Time Mode the watch shows the current time in another time zone. For the selected city code you can switch between standard time and daylight saving time. The manual also describes how to swap the Home City and the World Time city.

Alarms and hourly time signal

In Alarm Mode you set an alarm time. Each alarm can be turned on and off. The watch also has an Hourly Time Signal, which is also turned on and off from this mode.

Illumination

The illumination is turned on manually with button B in every mode except the setting mode. The duration is 1.5 or three seconds and is selected in the time setting mode. The watch also has an auto light switch, which can be turned on and off. To save the battery, it turns itself off about six hours after being turned on. If you want to use it again, repeat the procedure to turn it on.

Casio warns to turn off the auto light switch before riding a bicycle, motorcycle or any other vehicle. Its sudden activation can be a distraction and cause an accident.

Hand position correction

If the hour and minute hands do not match the digital time, the manual provides a correction of their home position. The procedure includes checking the positions of the hour and minute hands and adjusting them. The detailed steps are in the Hand Home Position Correction section of the PDF file.
