From daring first flights to the birth of commercial air travel, Breitling's history is inseparable from that of aviation. In the 1930s, Breitling's Huit Aviation Department made its name by inventing precision cockpit clocks. Two decades later, it introduced another new instrument for flight, this time in wearable form: Ref. 765 AVI. This pioneering pilot's watch provided the technical backdrop for today's Classic AVI, a collection inspired by the robust spirit of famous early aircraft. The Classic AVI tribute to the Vought F4U Corsair honors one of these legends. As a WWII naval aircraft, the Vought F4U Corsair had to make difficult takeoffs and landings from aircraft carriers and remote airstrips. Speed and lift were essential, and the aircraft delivered with distinctive features, becoming the first single-engine fighter to break the 400-mile-per-hour (640 km/h) barrier while also delivering an outstanding rate of climb. Its “gull-wing” design, massive propeller and distinctive blue livery make it an icon of aviation history. As a genuine pilot's watch, designed to withstand the harsh conditions of a vintage cockpit, the Classic AVI Tribute to Vought F4U Corsair features large, highly legible Arabic numerals on the dial and bezel. The knurled bezel of the 42-millimeter case ensures an optimal grip, even for a gloved pilot's hand. The top-stitched calfskin leather straps are reminiscent of the stitching on classic flight gear, while the stainless steel bracelet offers an elegant alternative.
