Casio module 5490: user manual and setup (EFR-552D)

The module number is printed on the case back of every Casio, separately from the model name. Turn the watch over and look for the four-digit number on the back cover. If it says 5490, the instructions below apply to your watch. They cover setting the time and day, using the stopwatch and correcting the hands.

Which watches have module 5490

Casio EFR-552D-1A2VUEF

Module 5490 is an analog movement with hands and a crown. Besides the hour, minute and second hands, it has a 24-hour hand and a day of the month indicator. The stopwatch is read on separate minute and second hands. On some models, part of the information is shown on rotating discs instead of hands. The watch is operated with two buttons and a crown. At Classic this module is found in the following Casio Edifice models:

Buttons and crown

The watch has two buttons and a crown. Button A starts, stops and resumes the stopwatch. Button B takes a split time and resets the stopwatch. The crown has two pulled-out positions. In the first position (Click 1) you change the day of the month. In the second position (Click 2) you set the time. While the crown is pulled out, the watch does not keep time.

On models water resistant to 100 or 200 meters, the crown is screw-locked. Before setting, unscrew it by turning it toward you. Then pull it out without excessive force. While the crown is unscrewed, the watch loses its water resistance. After setting, screw it fully back in.

How to set the time and date

Setting the time

  1. Wait for the second hand to reach 12 o'clock.
  2. Pull the crown out to the second position (Click 2).
  3. Turn the crown to set the hour and minutes.
  4. Push the crown back in.

Take care to set the correct a.m. or p.m. time. When changing the time, move the minute hand four or five minutes past the desired position. Then move it back to the exact minute.

Setting the day of the month

  1. Pull the crown out to the first position (Click 1).
  2. Turn the crown toward you to set the day.
  3. Push the crown back in.

The day indicator works with a 31-day month. After shorter months, correct the day manually. Do not change the day between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. Otherwise the indicator may not advance correctly at midnight.

Stopwatch

The stopwatch measures elapsed time in 1-second units up to 9 minutes and 59 seconds. Measurement stops automatically at the end of the 10th minute. Do not operate the stopwatch while the crown is pulled out. The stopwatch minute hand is synchronized with the stopwatch second hand. Three types of measurement are possible:

  • Elapsed time: A starts, A stops, A resumes, A stops again, B resets.
  • Split time: A starts, B shows the split time, B releases the split time, A stops, B resets.
  • Two finishers: A starts. B at the finish of the first runner shows their time. A stops at the finish of the second runner. B releases and shows the time of the second runner. B resets.

Correcting the home positions of the hands

If the stopwatch hands do not return to zero when reset, do the following.

  1. Pull the crown out to the second position (Click 2).
  2. Use button A (clockwise) and button B (counterclockwise) to move the stopwatch second hand to 12 o'clock.
  3. The stopwatch minute hand should come to 0.
  4. When all hands are in place, push the crown back in.

If you hold down a button, the second hand moves quickly until you release it. While the crown is pulled out, the watch does not keep time. After the procedure, set the correct time again.

Rotating bezel

If the model has a rotating bezel, turn it so that the ▼ mark aligns with the minute hand. The bezel then shows how much time has elapsed since that moment.

Accuracy and battery

The accuracy is on average ±20 seconds per month. The battery is one silver oxide battery, type SR920SW. Its life is about 3 years.
