Casio module 5638: user manual and setup (ECB-2000)

The module number is printed on the case back of the watch, among the other markings. If it says 5638, this guide applies to your watch. The description follows the official Casio manual for module 5638.

Which watches use module 5638

Module 5638 is a combined analog-digital module. The watch has hour hands, a separate mode hand and a digital display. The module supports a phone connection (Mobile Link) for automatic time setting. At Classic it is found in the Edifice series:

Buttons and modes

The manual marks the buttons with the letters A, B, C and D. The watch has five modes: Timekeeping Mode, World Time Mode, Stopwatch Mode, Timer Mode and Alarm Mode.

• Press C to move to the next mode.
• Hold C for at least two seconds from any mode to return to the Timekeeping Mode.
• In the Timekeeping Mode each press of B changes the digital display: month, date and day of the week; month, date and seconds; hour, minutes and seconds.
• In the Timekeeping Mode press D to view the Schedule Timer.

The mode hand shows different information depending on the mode. In World Time Mode it points to [WT], and in Alarm Mode it points to [AL]. In Stopwatch Mode it shows the lap seconds, and in Timer Mode it shows the minutes. In the Timekeeping Mode it shows the remaining minutes of the current Schedule Timer event. When more than 120 minutes remain, it points to [OVER].

The display has indicators for PM time in 12-hour format, for daylight saving time, for an alarm that is on and for the hourly time signal that is on. There are also indicators for Auto Light, for airplane mode and for the phone connection. A separate indicator flashes while the hands are moved aside.

Moving the hands to read the display

The hands can cover part of the display. Hold A and press C to move them aside. To return them, hold A and press C again, or change the mode with C. If you do not press anything for about one hour, the hands return to their normal positions on their own.

How to set the time and date

The manual recommends setting the time through a phone connection. After pairing, the watch receives data from the phone and corrects the date and time on its own. If the phone cannot connect, the setting is done with the buttons on the watch. The first step is choosing a Home City.

1. Enter the Timekeeping Mode. If you are in another mode, hold C for two seconds.
2. Hold B for at least two seconds. Release the button when the name of the current Home City appears on the display.
3. Use buttons A and D to change the Home City. The full list of cities is in the City Table in the manual.
4. The daylight saving time setting is factory set to [AUTO] for all cities. In most cases this means no manual switching between daylight saving and standard time is needed.
5. Press B to exit the setting screen.

Illumination and Auto Light

Press A to turn on the illumination. It turns off automatically if an alarm starts to sound. With Auto Light on, the illumination turns on by itself when you turn your wrist toward your face at an angle of 40 degrees or more. While the function is active, [LT] stays on the display. If you do not turn it off manually, it turns off by itself after about six hours.

1. In the Timekeeping Mode hold B for at least two seconds until the Home City appears.
2. Press C 13 times until [AUTO] appears.
3. Use D to switch between [ON] and [OFF].
4. Press B to exit.

The illumination duration is selected the same way. Press C 14 times to reach [LIGHT] and use D to select [1] for 1.5 seconds or [3] for 3 seconds. Auto Light does not work while an alarm, timer or other signal is sounding. It may not work if the watch is tilted 15 degrees or more from horizontal. Static electricity or magnetism also interfere; lower your arm and raise it again. The slight clicking sound during movement comes from the Auto Light switch and is not a defect.

Phone connection (Mobile Link)

The watch pairs with a phone and receives data from it for automatic correction of the date and time. According to the manual, the phone is also used to choose from more than 300 cities for World Time. Stopwatch data can be transferred to the phone, and a number of settings are made from it. On an aircraft or in a medical facility, turn on Airplane Mode to stop the connection. The manual also describes the Phone Finder function and unpairing when changing phones.

World Time

In World Time Mode the mode hand points to [WT]. The manual describes checking the time in another city, selecting a World Time city and swapping the Home City and World Time. At its end there is a City Table and a daylight saving time table.

Alarm and hourly time signal

In Alarm Mode the mode hand points to [AL]. The display has separate indicators for an alarm that is on and for the hourly time signal that is on. The manual describes setting the alarms, turning on the hourly time signal and stopping a sounding alarm. While an alarm sounds, the illumination turns off.

Stopwatch

The Stopwatch Mode measures elapsed time and lap times. The mode hand shows the lap seconds. The manual gives an example of recording a lap time in a race. The recorded data can be reviewed on the phone after transfer.

Countdown Timer

In Timer Mode you set a start time for the countdown. The mode hand shows the minutes, which are also visible on the digital display.

Schedule Timer

The Schedule Timer function tracks the current event in your schedule. In the Timekeeping Mode press D to view it. The mode hand shows the remaining minutes until the end of the event. When more than 120 minutes remain, it points to [OVER]. The notification sound can be turned on and off.

Hand alignment

If the hands do not match the digital time, the manual describes correcting their alignment. The steps are in the PDF file.

Battery

When the battery is low, an indicator flashes on the display and some functions stop. If the indicator keeps flashing, the battery must be replaced. The manual recommends having the replacement done at a Casio service center or at the retailer where the watch was bought.
